Eleven Students Graduate From South High At Semester

Story by: Jenna Anderson

This year eleven students graduated at the end of the first semester from South.
This is about the typical number of early graduates according to counselor Steve Schneider.
Students who successfully meet all graduation requirements are authorized to receive their diploma before the date on which their class would otherwise graduate.
They also have to complete a minimum of seven semesters of high school work. Once students have met the qualifications they must submit a written request from their parents and a formal application before Oct. 1 of their senior year.
Schneider stated, “Most students who chose to do it, do it to get a start on school or for an increase in work hours to help pay for school.”
Students accepted for early graduation are still eligible for consideration for scholarships, eligible for valedictorian/salutatorian, will maintain class rank based on the cumulative highest (GPA) at the end of the seventh semester, and may participate in graduation ceremonies with their designated class.
Kayla Becker, one of South High’s early graduates stated, “I do plan on walking the bowl in June. I told myself I don’t want to miss out on graduation with the rest of my classmates.”
The Board of Education accepted and approved the early graduates at their Jan. 22 monthly meeting.
