Six Staff Members Retiring

Story by: Gemma Sutkiewicz

Next school year there will be fewer familiar faces working at South High.
Five teachers and one educational assistant will end their illustrious careers and enter the relaxing world of retirement.
Dan Ristow, Language Arts teacher, has been at South for 27 years.
He took an early retirement package to be able to spend more time with his son. He certainly will miss the students and staff as well as the relationships he has formed.
Freshmen Rachel Schleicher expressed her appreciation by stating, “Mr. [Dan] Ristow was one of the best English teachers I’ve ever had.”
Dan Ristow’s brother Phil Ristow, Social Studies teacher, will also be retiring from South this year. But students who will miss the Ristow brothers shouldn’t worry, there will still be one Ristow teaching at South.
Culinary arts teacher, Betty Price, has been teaching for over 35 years, and over 17 at South. Although Price will miss the teenage personalities and encouraging students to meet their full potential, she will be really busy in retirement. She plans to spend her extra time sowing, quilting, gardening, reading, and visiting hospitals with her therapy dog, “Zuzu”.
Price mentioned, “I’ll miss the students more than anything”.
Another retiring teacher is math teacher Kevin Telschow. He dedicated his career to teaching a variety of math classes at South.
Sophomore Silvia Tovar noted, “Mr. Telschow is a really nice teacher”.
Other staff retiring include art teacher Carol Rokicki and EA Kathy Young.
All six of the retirees will be sorely missed at South. Teaching and working with students is a rewarding career, but hopefully they will all enjoy a well-deserved retirement.
