Metals Shop Gets New Look, New Equipment
Story by: Michael Wagner
The South High metals technology classroom was completely remodeled this summer and refurbished with new equipment.
According to Joe Janicek, metals technology instructor, factories today are high tech, and South tried to match the metal workshop at Lakeshore Technical College (LTC) so that more students would become more interested in metals as a career. The school has received a Plasma CAM welder and CNC Plasma Cutter, which can cut out a lot of designs using a computer to upload a picture, and it then uses a cutting head to cut out metal.
“It’s great. It allows more room to do projects, get around safer and easier, and also creates more opportunities for students to feel accomplished in their projects,” said junior David Kesner.
Junior Matt Kowalis stated, “Nice, clean, and presentable ;compared to the old shop and I like the new welders because they are easier and safer to work with.”
“This is the first time the metal shop has had a face lift in 50 years and we are striving toward a more ideal clean manufacturer lab to show what metals class is all about,” Janicek said.
