Shakespeare’s Romantic Comedy is Spring Play

Story by: Gemma Sutkiewicz

Are you in the mood for a Shakespearian romantic comedy? Then South High’s spring play, A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream is something you won’t want to miss. The play, which will feature South High drama students, will premiere March 7 - 10.
The classic theater production is actually a play within a play about two men who love the same woman. The play is directed by South High’s own, Mariya Grabow.
Grabow has directed several plays and musicals at South over the last several years. Her dedication and passion help make South’s productions exceptional. She is looking forward to presenting a classic piece of theater that has a modern day twist with lots of glitter.
“I’m loving the glitter,” said Grabow.
As a substitute for the usual seating for plays, the spring play will use the “black box” seating. The “black box” is when the audience members sit on stage instead of the typical designated sections in the auditorium.
The cast and crew represent students from all grade levels. Student actors practice everyday for several hours in the library. The stage crew is also hard at work. With its setting in sixteenth century England, the scenery and costumes will be extraordinary. Part of the show will feature actors interacting with the audience. Another interesting feature will be the old English spoken by the actors.
Veteran actress. Anna Polasky stars in the production. This is Polasky’s fourth production at South. She is having lots of fun and enjoys meeting new people. Freshmen Erin Gamb is also enjoying the theater experience. Gamb has been in many shows, but this will be her first high school play. She says she is looking forward to this new experience.
“I get to meet people while doing something I really enjoy,” stated Gamb.
Polasky says she gets her acting inspiration from Sandra Bullock, while Gamb looks up to Anne Hathaway. For those interested in attending, tickets can be purchased from any of the student actors or at the door.
