Culinary Students Add “Nest” For Healthy Breakfast

Story by: Gemma Sutkiewicz

Seniors Carrisa Neese, Dalton Burke and Paige Soerens are manning the new breakfast option, “The Nest”.
The Hospitality and Co-Op classes are now serving healthy breakfast options this semester. The tasty food cart will be open on Friday mornings from 7:30-7:55 a.m., outside of Room 103.
The Nest stands for “Nourishing Eats Served To Go”. The students sell different types of muffins, cookies and smoothies that they made that week in class.
“I really like working with all the different foods,” Neese stated.
All of the foods are highly nutritious and packed with proteins, vitamins, antioxidants and other healthy ingredients. The Nest students claim that their foods taste so good you don’t even know the nutrients are there.
Culinary Arts teacher, Betty Price, states her favorite thing about the Nest is that, “it involves all different aspects of a business.” She enjoys the Cocoa Banana Smoothies that the class sells on Friday mornings.
Price hopes that the healthy breakfast alternatives will benefit students by helping them to feel more awake throughout the day, so they will have longer attention spans during their classes. She feels that the vending machines and school store may not offer all of the nutrients that students need throughout the day.
The Nest is the perfect way to gain experience for future jobs. Soerens talked about how she wants to pursue a career in culinary arts when she is older.
“I have always had a passion for it,” Soerens said about her love of culinary arts.
“It’s not just making food,” Price added. “The students have to think of creative ideas each week for the Nest. Along with cooking the food, students have to make posters, do advertising, and taste test all the yummy treats.”
Whether you are running late or skipped breakfast at home, make sure to stop in the Culinary Arts room (Room 103) and pick up a delicious and nutritious breakfast option made by your fellow classmates.
