South Students Participate in 'Every 15 Minutes' Activity

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly one-third of all traffic-related deaths involve alcohol-impaired drivers. On Friday, March 19, 2010 Sheboygan South High School's Students Against Substance Abuse (SASA) demonstrated the impact that alcohol-related traffic accidents can have by participating in an activity called "Every 15 Minutes." The goal of the activity was to provide a simulation of the fact that approximately every 15 minutes someone dies from an alcohol-related traffic accident. Student volunteers acted as accident victims by wearing a t-shirt that read "Every 15 Minutes" and remaining silent for the day. At end of the school day, the entire student body was provided information about impaired driving, including information about driving under the influence of drugs other than alcohol.

Research shows that a driver's concentration, perception, coordination, and reaction time are affected. This issue is of even greater concern in the state of Wisconsin because Wisconsin has the highest rate for driving under the influence (National Surveys on Drug Use and Health) and more than half of traffic deaths in Wisconsin involve alcohol (National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration).

Individuals who would like more information about this topic can contact Jeanna Goodman, ATOD Prevention Facilitator/SASA Advisor, at jgoodman@sheboygan..k12.wi.us.
