SASD art teachers Carol Rokicki, from South High School, and Frank Juarez, from North high School, were presenters at the 2010 Wisconsin Art Education Association (WAEA) Art Education Fall Conference in La Crosse, WI on Thursday, October 28, 2010.
Rokicki's presentation was entitled Calligraphy/Illuminated Quotes, in which she addressed calligraphy - the Greek word meaning beautiful handwriting. Participants learned how to create Old English lettering with pens and India ink. Participants also learned the history of illumination based on sources such as the "Book of Kells", which is known for its lettering and beautiful hand drawn illustrations. Each participant received a packet of calligraphy materials which was used to create an original quote or saying illuminated on parchment paper.
Juarez's topic was Curricular Application on Social Media. This workshop engaged beginning, intermediate and advanced learners on how to implement new ideas in the development and fulfillment of social media in the 21st Century. Participants learned how the importance/impact that advocacy, collaboration and curriculum have in social media and how social media enhances learning in the classroom and in their profession as educators.
