Elena Catalan, a senior violinist at South High School, had the opportunity of a lifetime on Friday, October 28. Elena was one of 20 music students chosen by the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) to perform at this year’s music teacher conference, held in Madison, WI. The students who performed at conference were all recipients of the Exemplary Soloist Award after performing at their State Music Festivals last spring.
In 2011, State Festival Adjudicators identified 454 truly exemplary soloists at the 2011 WSMA State Festival. Of those 454 soloists, 20 were chosen to perform at Conference.
Consider these statistics...
• The exemplary soloists were selected amidst 8,207 solo events of the 11,526 total qualifying events at the WSMA State Festival.
• Prior to qualifying for state, the 454 soloists who earned the exemplary honors were among more than 220,000 students who participated in 60,449 events at WSMA District Solo and Ensemble Festivals across the entire state.
Elena performed Meditation from “Thais” by Jules Massenet. She was accompanied by her orchestra teacher, Ann Muellenbach.
