Recently hired as the Sheboygan South boys’ basketball head coach, Michael Rank is excited to lead the Redwings in the 2013-2014 season.

Coach Rank is no stranger to the South High Basketball program.  As a 1993 alumni, he played for Coach Lyle Peterson and went on to be an All-FRVC and All-Sheboygan Press Area Player.  Upon graduation, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh where he played for Ted VanDellan and Tim Gaubatz (another SHS alum). After a knee injury sidelined him from playing, Rank turned to coaching at Oshkosh West high school with the late Steve Randall. During his tenure, the team won 3 FVA Conference titles with deep runs in the WIAA tournament.

Rank was very involved in the AAU circuit in the late 1990’s.  Rank also coached numerous teams in the Sheboygan Dean’s Spring Classic.  Rank coached and led many all-state players and numerous D-1 players such as:
*Danny Weisse (Oshkosh West High School/University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee)
*Adrian Tigert (Oshkosh West High School/University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee)
*Drew Diener (Fond du Lac High School/Saint Louis University)
*Julian Schwarz (Waukesha South High School/Wisconsin Player of the Year/University of Wisconsin)
*Dave Mader (Appleton East High School/University of Wisconsin)
*Ben Grunst (Marquette University High School/Butler University)
*Greg Monfre (Waukesha South High School/University of Wisconsin-Green Bay)
*Derek Scheidt (Fond du Lac High School/University of Wisconsin-Green Bay)
The opportunity to coach these types of athletes at a young age was an incredible experience that Coach Rank values.

Upon graduating from UW-Oshkosh in 1999; Rank began his first teaching position in the Brillion Area School District.  At Brillion High School, he coached football and was the Head JV Boys Basketball Coach/Assistant Varsity coach under Peter Kittel.

In 2001, Rank returned to Sheboygan when given the opportunity to teach in the Sheboygan Area School District.  He has worked his way up through the basketball and football programs at South High.  While Dan Coopman was leading the South High basketball program, Rank served as a varsity assistant coach, Head JV, and Head Freshman Coach.

Rank left the South High basketball staff after being given the opportunity to be the Head Varsity Basketball Coach at Random Lake High School in the basketball competitive CLC. During his tenure in Random Lake, he was responsible for all facets of the program.  Rank upstarted the very first basketball feeder program, ran summer camps for grades K-8, and summer programs for the high school level Rams. Rank resigned from his post to help coach and watch his son compete in middle school basketball at Christ Child Academy and in the Junior Redwing program.

Twenty years after playing his last game for South High, Rank was honored to accept the opportunity to return to his alma mater and lead the Redwings boys' basketball program.  He is excited to guide the student athletes through the difficult Fox River Classic Conference.

Coach Rank has revamped the Junior Redwing feeder program. Plans are in the works to extend his hand out to all former coaches and players from years past.  Rank has formed an Executive Board of community members close to the program to help guide the program in the positive direction it needs.  Rank will continue the long lasting tradition of the Redwings 3-Point Club.  Rank has put together a winning team of leaders from the community to lead the 3-Point Club.

Coach Rank currently lives in Sheboygan and teaches Health at Sheboygan South High School and is the Health Department Chair.  Rank graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in physical education with minors in health education and coaching athletics. Rank earned his Master’s Degree from Marian University in administration leadership. Recently earned his Online Facilitation Certification with the Wisconsin eSchool Network aligned with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.  Rank also earned a Cooperating Teacher Certificate from Concordia University of Wisconsin.  He lives in Sheboygan with his wife, Melissa, son Michael Jr. and daughter Natalie.
