PHYSICAL EDUCATION POLICIES
For safety concerns of all students and their classmates, the SASD requires students to remove all jewelry for ALL activities. Jewelry includes necklaces, watches, bracelets, rings, sweat bands, and earrings (except post or studs). It is highly recommended that students keep all valuables locked in his/her locker. It is also required here at Urban that students do not chew gum during P.E. class.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION GRADES FOR GRADE 6
The transition to middle school is a difficult one. As a result, 6th graders will be graded pass or fail for the 1st quarter. After 1st quarter grades will be determined A, B, C, D, or F.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION DRESS AND PARTICIPATION/EXPECTATIONS
Students will be prepared for the class with gym shoes, shorts/sweatpants, and the Sheboygan Area School District gym shirt for inside activities, plus clothing for cold weather outside activities. Clothing worn to P.E. class cannot be clothing that was worn to school that day (ie. sweatshirts, sweatpants, shorts). The P.E. Department has extra uniforms that the student can borrow on occasion if he/she forgets his/hers at home.
For the student who does not change for gym class the following steps will apply:
- Excused once each quarter – the student will still be expected to participate without gym clothes.
- If not dressing becomes an ongoing occurrence a parent will be contacted by a phone call or a note sent home.
The P.E. Department has extra uniforms that the student can borrow on occasion, if he/she forgets his/her uniform at home. However, to receive full credit for the day, that student must return the uniform to his/her teacher at the end of class.
Participation is the key factor in both skill development and grading. We expect everyone to participate in the physical education activities unless a written excuse from the parents is presented to the teacher. This is only valid for two days. A physician's statement is requited for a student to be excused for more than two consecutive days.
• If the student refuses to participate and/or dress, a parent will be contacted by a phone call and/or a note sent home. If not dressing or non-participation becomes an ongoing occurrence, a plan of action will need to be developed to address the issue.
