Students from middle schools around the region recently participated in the 27th annual Mathcounts mathematics competition. Sheboygan Area School District students performed well, and several will be advancing on to the state competition.
Morgan R. of Urban Middle School finished in first place and Sam W. of Horace Mann Middle School took second place.
Mathcounts is a national competition for middle school students and is administered by the National Society of Professional Engineers. It is designed to enhance the math skills of middle school students and promote excellence in mathematics. The Mathcounts competitions have written and oral rounds, as well as individual and team components.
The team from Urban Middle School finished in third place and, along with Morgan and Sam, will advance to the statewide competition on March 6 in Madison. Winners there will advance to the national finals in May in Orlando, Fla.
Horace Mann's team finished seventh in the competition, which featured 22 schools and 134 students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades.
