Washington School Bookstore is Operated by Students
Twice a month students at Washington School for Comprehensive Literacy can add to their personal libraries by purchasing books from the school bookstore. Every other Wednesday, students are invited browse the shop’s three display shelves: fiction, nonfiction, and picture books. With every book priced at just $1.00, the bookstore provides an opportunity for students to own books at a very reasonable price. A frequent shopper card also gives a free book for every five purchased.
The bookstore was started in 2010 with the help of a grant from Target stores and volunteer time from Target employees. The grant supplied the initial purchase of books that would be for sale. Target employees trained the first workers and created bookshelves for displaying the merchandise.
Student workers complete an application and are trained in how to handle money, stock shelves, and provide customer service. The employees, from grades three through five, are compensated with books.
Each week over 100 books sold with all proceeds used to purchase more books.
