Programs and Activities

With an emphasis on literacy, math and real-world science, students at Washington School for Comprehensive Literacy build a strong foundation in the core curriculum. To enhance student learning, specialists in music, art, and physical education work with students weekly. Below are additional programs and activities available at our school.

English Language Learner (ELL) Program
Licensed ELL teachers provide classroom instruction and additional learning support for students who are non-native English speakers to ensure they acquire English proficiency.

PACE Gifted and Talented Program
Washington School provides a challenging extension of the classroom curriculum for students who have been identified as gifted and talented.  These activities are designed to challenge students with rigorous concepts and develop their skills in their area of giftedness.  The program also offers challenges for high ability students who are not identified as gifted.  Math Olympiad and High Ability Reading groups are just two of the many options.  PACE is one way our school meets the varying needs of our students.  Brad Washuleski is the resource teacher and contact person for the program.

Special Education Services

Band
Beginning band is open to all 5th grade students. We offer instruction on flute, oboe, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone and combined percussion. Students receive one twenty minute lesson and one thirty minute full rehearsal per week.

Orchestra
The strings program is open to 5th grade students. Students who participate in the strings program attend a weekly, small group lesson that is scheduled before school or during the school day. Instruments available for study are the violin, viola, cello, and string bass.

After School Homework Room
Boys & Girls Club offers a "Homework Room" after school Monday-Friday to allow students to finished their homework and get assistance if necessary.

Boys & Girls Club After School Program
The Sheboygan County Boys and Girls Club contracts with our school to provide an after-school program of instructional and recreational activities each week, at Washington The hours for the 2012-2013 school year are Monday-Friday, 3:30 to 5:30, except Wednesdays, from 2:30 to 5:30.

Wednesdays for the first 55 students in grades K-2 who complete a Boys & Girls Club membership application, there will be a program at Washington. A waiting list will be formed and parents will be called if spaces are available.   Grades 3-5 will take the Boys & Girls Club bus to the Stayer Center & return by 5:30.

Breakfast Program
Washington School provides its students with the opportunity to start their day out with a healthy breakfast before school.   The Breakfast bell rings at 8:05.

Safety Patrol
Washington's safety patrol enlists Fifth Grade Students to help other children safely cross the streets near our building. Students take the job of being a safety patrol member very seriously and demonstrate good judgment. Part of our safety patrol pledge is to: report for duty on time, strive to prevent traffic and other kinds of accidents, report dangerous practices of students and drivers, and to earn the respect of fellow students.

Student Council
The Washington Student Council is open to all 4th and 5th grade students. The Council helps students develop leadership skills through a variety of school and community projects.
