Wilson Band Students Learn from Guest Conductor
The Wilson Elementary School band hosted recently a clinic with guest conductor Jeffrey Stirling. Stirling is one of 4 finalists who have applied to be the new conductor of the Sheboygan Symphony. Stirling's clinic at Wilson focused on basic ensemble skills and musical concepts using "Italian Carousel," a grade 1 band composition by Mike Hannickel.
Specific topics during the clinic included entrances, releases, different styles of articulation, and how they affect note length, and subdivision during longer note values. The 38 members of the Wilson band were very attentive and worked hard to apply his suggestions to their music. The band members will continue to work on these concepts in preparation for their May 20th concert which will include "Italian Carousel" and other selections such as Beethoven's "Ode to Joy," and variations on the theme to "Lightly Row," with the band playing variations that students recently composed.
