Wilson's Walk 4 Warmth Raises $750
Students, families, and staff recently gathered at Wilson Elementary School for the school's second annual Junior Walk 4 Warmth. Participants in the walk collected donations from sponsors in advance. Gathering in the school foyer Saturday morning, the group walked the route set up on the playground and field. Wilson teacher and Junior Walk 4 Warmth organizer, Andrew Kautzer, said, "Donations from the walk help some of those in Sheboygan and Sheboygan County who are low income households and who may be experiencing a crises in paying their heating bills."
Recipients must meet specific eligibility criteria as identified by Wisconsin Public Service. When asked how he came up with the idea, Kautzer replied, "The original idea for the walk began with South High School about 8-9 years ago." The South High walk usually takes place in December and since its inception has raised over $40,000 for heating assistance. Each participant in the Walk 4 Warmth who contributes a minimum of ten dollars receives a shirt. The unique aspect of participants receiving a shirt is that none of the donation money is used to purchase shirts. All donations are given to Wisconsin Public Service. Shirts are provided by the South High Spirit Club, which raises funds throughout the year to provide shirts for special events.
Kautzer noted that Wilson's walk this year raised just over $750, surpassing last year's total.
