The third annual Hmong New Year Celebration was held at Wilson Elementary School in late November. Organized by the English Language Learner (ELL) staff, the day included a parade of kindergarten to fifth grade students dressed in traditional Hmong costumes as well as other ELL students dressed in their best party clothes, crowns, and special headbands.
Earlier in the week, Mr. Shua Yang, a parent volunteer at Wilson, organized a group of dancers from Farnsworth and South High Schools to demonstrate a traditional Hmong dance.
Following the parade, students participated in games, craft projects and a lunch of traditional Hmong and Hispanic foods, provided by parents. During the morning recess, the entire student body sampled egg rolls, donated by Union Oriental Grocery.
A highlight of the day for students was seeing their teachers dressed in Hmong Costumes, donated by a parent.
