PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. PBIS is about teaching and promoting safe, respectful and responsible behaviors. Students are recognized for making positive choices that follow our school expectations. When students do not follow the expectations they are re-taught the appropriate behavior and, when necessary, are given an Office Discipline Referral (ODR).
Using a research-based and data-driven Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) program, Cleveland Elementary enhances student learning through teaching and recognizing positive behavior. Safe, respectful, and responsible students are best empowered to be successful students and citizens.
At Cleveland, the Cool Tool lessons are selected based on school-wide data. Weekly lesson plans are provided to staff. Teachers are responsible for teaching the lessons to the students, and all staff teach the same lesson during each week.
Staff members hand out PAWS to any student who is displaying appropriate behavior. Staff members also verbally praise the student for the behavior, specifically stating what behavior was observed. The verbal praise is an essential component of using PAWS as this allows students to hear what specific behavior is desirable. One day each week is chosen as 'Double PAWS Day' when students can earn two PAWS for displaying appropriate behavior. An entire class can earn a 'Power Paw' when they are all working together to display appropriate behavior.
ODRs are Office Discipline Referrals. When a student is not following the school-wide expectations, an ODR will be given by a teacher, EA or the principal. ODR’s include consequences for the student’s behavior. You will be contacted if your child receives an ODR.
Cleveland hosts quarterly long-term reinforcement activities for all students. Past incentives have included movie days, game days, magicians, drumlines from area high schools, and a dance party.
