I am a former classroom teacher with 14 years of experience in the Sheboygan Area School District (grades 2 and 1, primarily at Washington School) and a Master of Science in Teaching degree from the State University of New York at New Paltz. I believe the learning experience begins with relationship. Students need to feel safe, valued, cared for, believed in, and respected. Teachers need to set clear boundaries and reasonable expectations for every student. Learning styles and multiple intelligences (the different ways we are “smart”) vary person to person. I am a firm believer in the value of social and emotional intelligence, meaning that academics alone do not educate the whole person. Learning to understand ourselves and others — how to get along with others and value diversity — is critically important, especially in today’s world. This is why Sheboygan Leadership Academy’s emphasis on the 52 virtues is paramount and why I feel truly blessed to work here. Originally from New York State, I moved to Wisconsin in 1999 with my husband, Jim, and our son, Ben. Jim own his own woodworking business, Black River Woodcrafting, and Ben is a vocal performance and music education major at Lawrence University in Appleton, WI. Our spunky and adorable kitty, Teague, rounds out the family.
My absolute favorite hobby is acting! I have performed in numerous community theater productions with Sheboygan Theatre Company, Theater for Young Audiences, Memories Dinner Theater, and Random Lake Productions. My favorite roles are comedic characters, but I also enjoy playing dramatic roles. Other fun activities for me include singing, yoga, walking, cycling, watching movies, reading, and step aerobics. The two virtues that I embody most are compassion and creativity.
