School Choice

Families living within the Sheboygan Area School District have many options when it comes to choosing a school for their child.

Each home address has pre-determined neighborhood schools that students may attend. Enrollment is guaranteed at your neighborhood school.

Parents may also use our School Choice program to apply to attend a different school within our district. In addition to our neighborhood schools, the Sheboygan Area School District offers a variety of charter schools that offer new and different learning environments.

Parents interested in applying for a transfer to a different school in the district must complete a School Choice Application.

School Choice Rounds

School Choice Transfer Request Applications are reviewed during three different rounds.

  • Round 1 is open from December 1 through February 8. This round has the most availability to approve school choice applications.
  • Round 2 is open from February 9 through April 30. This round has some availability to approve school choice applications.
  • Round 3 is open from May 1 through the end of the following school year. This round has limited and the least availability to approve school choice applications.

School Choice Guidelines and Application

Any student who lives within the Sheboygan Area School District has the opportunity to apply to attend any of the district schools through our School Choice enrollment process. Parents interested in requesting a transfer to a different school in the district must complete a School Choice Application between December 1 - February 8 for the following school year.

School Choice Applications are approved with the understanding that the parent/guardian is responsible for transportation and the child will remain at the school requested for the entire year.

Note: Non-residents may apply through the Wisconsin Public School Open Enrollment process, but will be considered after district resident applications are processed. Once open enrolled, students may remain in the district.

  1. Complete the School Choice Application.
  2. In consultation with the elementary and secondary principals, the Assistant Superintendent - Dept. of Student and Instructional Services will establish space availability for individual grade levels and buildings beyond which no incoming transfer students will be accepted.
  3. Parents will be notified by email whether your application has been approved, denied, or if your student has been placed on a waitlist.

School Choice Applications will be processed on a random selection basis. If the application is approved, your child may remain at the school until the highest grade level of that school is completed.

  1. Students who reside in the school’s attendance area.
  2. Non-neighborhood students who attended the requested school last year and have received approval of continuation of transfer by the Assistant Superintendent.
  3. Siblings of students attending the school of choice.
  4. New intradistrict transfer requests received by February 8.

School Choice Applications are approved with the understanding that the parent/guardian is responsible for transportation and the child will remain at the school requested for the entire year. The schools also expect students to maintain good attendance, appropriate behavior, and be successful in their school. Violations of these conditions will result in the termination of the transfer approval.

The District will notify parents of approval or denial of School Choice Applications as follows:

  • Round 1 is open from December 1 through February 8. This round has the most availability to approve school choice applications. Parents will be notified of decisions on Round 1 applications by March 30.
  • Round 2 is open from February 9 through April 30. This round has some availability to approve school choice applications. Parents will be notified of decisions on Round 2 applications by June 30.
  • Round 3 is open from May 1 through the end of the following school year. This round has limited and the least availability to approve school choice applications. Parents will be notified of decisions as Round 3 applications are reviewed.

Students entering high school as ninth graders are eligible to participate in co-curricular activities providing they follow the WIAA guidelines.
