New Middle School Science Curriculum

New Middle School Science Curriculum

New this year, middle school students are learning science through our new curriculum called Issues & Science, created by SEPUP (Science Education for Public Understanding Program) and created at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley. SEPUP has been helping students explore and understand science for over 30 years.

Our goal is to help students think like scientists—asking questions, testing ideas, solving problems, and seeing how science connects to the real world. Your child will investigate these topics related to the following areas of study:

6th Grade

7th Grade

8th Grade

Earth & Space Science

Physical Science

Life Science

Land, Water & Human Interactions

Energy

Ecology

Geological Processes

Waves

Body Systems

Earth’s Resources

Force & Motion

From Cells to Organisms

Weather & Climate

Fields & Interactions

Reproduction

Solar System & Beyond

Chemistry of Materials

Evolution

Chemical Reactions

Students work hands-on—conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and using evidence to explain their ideas in their science notebook. Along the way, they’ll make connections across different areas of science and see how what they learn applies to their daily lives.

SEPUP’s lessons are tested with students and reviewed by experts to make sure they are accurate, engaging, and effective. We believe that when students explore real-world problems, they not only learn science—they discover that it’s exciting, important, and something they can do.

We’re looking forward to a year of curiosity, discovery, and hands-on learning!
