SASD Teacher Mentor Program Wraps Up Successful Year

SASD Teacher Mentor Program Wraps Up Successful Year

Last fall, the Sheboygan Area School District welcomed more than 60 new teachers to its schools. As part of the district’s onboarding process, each new teacher was paired with an experienced mentor who provided guidance, encouragement, and support throughout the school year.

This school year, 57 mentors and 62 mentees participated in quarterly support meetings designed to strengthen connections, provide meaningful professional learning, and create opportunities for collaboration. Year 2 Mentees are invited to participate in the second and third seminars and have access to the Google Classroom resource hub for new teachers. Sessions were shaped by participant feedback and included time for discussion, idea sharing, and lighthearted activities that helped build strong relationships among staff.

During the final gathering of the year, mentors and mentees enjoyed ice cream treats from Sweet Escapes ice cream truck, sunshine, and engaging training sessions as they celebrated a successful first year together.

The mentor program not only creates opportunities for fun and connection, but also provides valuable support for new teachers as they navigate their first year in the classroom. Through collaboration with experienced educators, mentees gain practical guidance, confidence, and new teaching strategies that help them thrive.

The SASD Mentor Program is led by Clarissa Ramos, who serves as Mentor Coordinator as well as Principal at Pigeon River Elementary School, and Mary Meyers-Wenninger, who serves as Lead Mentor, and is also an 8th grade teacher at Urban Middle School. Together, they provide leadership, guidance, and support for both mentors and mentees throughout the year.

“Attracting new teachers and supporting them as they build successful careers in the Sheboygan Area School District remains a priority for us,” said Jami Hintz, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources. “Clarissa and Mary have brought tremendous energy and leadership to the mentor program, and over the past several years they’ve helped strengthen and re-energize the experience for both mentors and mentees.

“Feedback from new teachers also tells us that time spent in smaller mentee-only groups is especially valuable in helping them build connections with others in similar stages of their careers. Our experienced mentors, along with building and district leaders, are committed to helping new teachers establish a strong foundation and continue to grow. We are very grateful for Clarissa, Mary, and all of our mentors for the positive impact they have on our staff and culture.”

Mentoring programs play an important role in promoting teacher retention and consistency among educators. They help new teachers build confidence, adapt to school culture, and exchange effective teaching strategies with experienced colleagues.

SASD mentors receive a $500 stipend and begin the program with training to help them feel prepared and confident in their role. Throughout the school year, mentors and mentees participate in in-person professional learning sessions focused on collaboration, support, and professional growth.
