Longfellow Students Embark on Wild Journey

"We're Wild About Reading" is the theme of Longfellow Elementary School's weeklong fund-raising contest. The students get to select their favorite wild reader, an animal belonging to staff members.

The staff has taken pictures of their pets reading books; there is even a photo of a fish reading One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.

To vote for their favorite photo students, and staff, must pay a penny. One penny equals one vote and the number of votes allowed is limitless. The proceeds from the voting will be used to adopt a manatee.

Parents attending conferences next week will have the chance to view the photos, which are on display in the school's library until Monday, November 24. The winning photo will be declared before Thanksgiving break.

Manatees are gentle water mammals, similar to a seal or sea lion, which are protected by the Endangered Species Act. Once Longfellow gets its own manatee, students will be able to track its movements through a website and will get regular updates, photos and a newsletter.
