South High School National Honor Society Has "Green" Sales

The South High School National Honor Society will be selling compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFB) and LED holiday lights in white and multi-color. The light bulbs save as much as 75% in energy and produce about 75% less heat than a standard bulb. They also last about 10 times longer and save more than $30 in energy costs over their lifetime. These particular bulbs emit a warm light like (incandescent bulbs) compared to other CFB's.

LED holiday lights use about 90% less energy than incandescent string lights. They can be used indoors or outdoors and last up to 200,000 hours when used indoors. If one bulb stops working the rest stay lit. They are very sturdy--almost impossible to break and they stay cool to the touch. They also burn much brighter than standard holiday lights. See focusonenergy.com and greenliteusa.com and energystar.gov for more details.

The costs for the light bulbs are $3.25 each for 60, 75, or 100 watt equivalents; 3-way bulbs are $6.25; multi-colored LED's are $5.50 for a 12 ft. string of 35 lights and white LED's are $7.50.

Prices are very comparable to (if not better than many) store prices. However, because this is a special program, the honor society will earn $2.00 for each light bulb and $3.00 for each string of lights. Funds earned will go to supporting needs in the community as well as scholarships for South students.

Individuals would like to place an order should contact a South High School National Honor Society member or Mrs. Goins at LGoins@sheboygan.k12.wi.us.

Sales end Thursday, December 4th. LED's should be in before Christmas with bulbs arriving in January.
