Wisconsin Character Education Partnership (WCEP) has selected Grant
Elementary School and the Elementary School for Arts and Academics --
The Grant School Family -- to receive the 2009 Promising Practice Award
for their character education initiatives.
Grant School Family will be honored on June 16, 2009 at the Focus on
Character Conference at the Country Springs Hotel & Conference
Center, Waukesha, Wis.
The 11 Wisconsin schools
that have received this award have developed unique and specific
programs that represent best practices in character education. This
award, sponsored by the Wisconsin Character Education Partnership in
partnership with the Character Education Partnership (CEP) seeks to
recognize schools or districts for their work in encouraging the
ethical, social and academic growth of their students through effective
The Grant School Family
engages their families as partners in character building with the
"Character Connections" or family homework. Each month Family Meetings
introduce the character-related theme and focus. Parents are encouraged
to attend these Friday morning meetings, but for those who are unable,
information and activities are sent home with students for the adults
to use to build on the school lessons.
award-winning schools will receive scholarships to attend the Focus on
Character Conference along with a pre-conference workshop providing
additional staff development in the effective elements of character
education for their schools.
These schools join the
ranks of Wisconsin Schools recognized by WCEP over the past three years
for their character education programs. WCEP promotes the intentional,
proactive teaching of character to K-12 students and supports the role
of community, parents and educators as key stakeholders in developing
character education programs in their schools.
