North Teacher's Artwork Selected for State Exhibition

Sheboygan North High School Art Department Chair Frank Juarez has been selected as one of 79 artists from across the state to exhibit his artwork at the Wisconsin Artists Biennial 2009 at the Rahr-West Art Museum in Manitowoc, May 17-July 12.

"This is the first time I have been juried into the Wisconsin Artists Biennial," said Juarez. "As an artist I am extremely excited to be a part of this experience. Out of 279 artists only 79 were selected in this highly competitive state-wide fine arts competition."

His selected work is oil on paper painting titled Untitled (1-109). The painting was up against 576 individual works.

Juarez has enjoyed making art since he was a child. Throughout middle and high school his peers and teachers knew him as an artist. It was not until after graduating from college that he had a genuine interest in painting.

"What started as experimental use of color, line, and composition slowly developed into a confident approach to create textural and transparent surfaces while using high key colors to emphasize lines and organic shapes that interplay with the composition," Juarez said. "The process of creating has allowed me to see and communicate the world around me. My work is constantly changing as I go through life. I paint to document personal and private moments. I paint to reflect. I paint to share. I paint to express."

Juarez focuses on the use of organic shapes in his compositions. He uses abstraction as a way to explore, adopt, adapt, and reflect on life experiences through documenting specific moments in time.

"As an art teacher I believe it validates the concept and act of making art as a life-long creative process. It does not end when you graduate from high school or college. Making art is a way to take time for yourself; to separate yourself from the rest of the world and to enjoy your creative freedom whether it is for public or private use," said Juarez.

The Rahr West Art Museum is located at 610 North Eighth Street, Manitowoc. A reception is being held May 17, 2-4 p.m.
