SASD Wins 'What Parents Want' Award

Joe Sheehan, SASD Superintendent, has been notified that SchoolMatch has selected the Sheboygan Area School District as one of its recipients for the 2009 Eighteenth Annual What Parents Want award. SchoolMatch of Columbus, OH, is an independent, nationwide service, helps corporate employee families find schools that match the needs of their children.

Since only 16% (2,436) of the nation's public school districts (15,571) are designated for this 2009 special honor, these school districts are among a select group nationally. The "What Parents Want" award recognizes those school districts that are accountable and are meeting the needs and desires of both students and parents.

An analysis of more than 95,000 parent questionnaires completed by SchoolMatch clients reveals parents most often look for school systems that are:

  • Competitive in academic test scores and academically solid but not so rigorous as to intimidate their children
  • Accredited
  • Recognized for excellence by a national foundation or by the U.S. Department of Education
  • Competitive in teacher salaries
  • Above average in instructional expenditures on a national percentile basis
  • Above average in expenditures for library/media services on a national percentile basis
  • Known for small class size

Since relocating parents often focus on finding a school system that produces a certain quality of "end product" (a high school graduate), only school systems that provide secondary school program are eligible for the award.
