Grant School Recognized for its Character Education

The Character Education Partnership (CEP) has announced Grant Elementary School and the Elementary School for Arts and Academics is one of 170 schools and districts from across the United States as well as Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Brazil receiving awards for "Promising Practices" in character education. CEP received a record 368 applications from 274 public and private schools and districts

Winning practices included creative ways to help students give back to their schools and communities, raise academic expectations and achievement, decrease bullying, increase tolerance, and solve conflicts peacefully

Character Connections Family Homework is the Promising Practice for which the Grant School Family was recognized. Character Connections are assignments that students' families complete which tie together the rules and values taught at home with those taught at school. Character education is most effective when families and school join efforts and Character Connections is an example of how this happens for students and families at Grant School and ESAA. To learn more about the Grant School Family, visit www.sheboygan.k12.wi.us/grant/gsfamily.html or www.sheboygan.k12.wi.us/esaa.

CEP will give the awards at the 16th National Forum on Character Education, Citizens of Character - the Foundation of Democracy, to be held October 29-31, 2009, outside of Washington, DC. In addition, winning practices will be featured in CEP's annual National Schools of Character publication and on the CEP website

The Promising Practices awards program is administered by CEP and made possible by generous support from the John Templeton Foundation and Lockheed Martin. Based in Washington, D.C., CEP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, nonsectarian coalition of organizations and individuals dedicated to helping schools develop people of good character for a just and compassionate society.
