Horace Mann Musicians Work with Nationally Renowned Composers
Students from Horace Mann Middle School were selected to play in an Honors Band Festival at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin on November 7, 2009. Seventh grader Erin C. (alto saxophone), eighth graders Paige H. (clarinet), Paola M. (clarinet), and Nathan F. (percussion) performed music with other young musicians from around the state.
The students had their music for a week and a half before the festival and had four hours of rehearsal time that day. Michael Sweeney worked with the seventh and eighth grade band. Sweeney is a composer, arranger and educator for Milwaukee's Hal Leonard Corporation, one of the largest music publishers in the world. Sweeney conducted three pieces: his own arrangement of an Irish folk tune called "Celtic Air and Dance"; a gentle and expressive version of "Korean Folk Rhapsody"; and "Where the Sun Breaks Through the Mist", another of Mr. Sweeney's own compositions
Before the students played "Sun", Robert Sheldon conducted his original composition, "Shenanigans", a piece full of special instrumental effects and fun melody lines. Sheldon is a composer, conductor and educator with Alfred Music Publishing.
