South Students Win Medals in Culinary Arts Competition

The Sheboygan South High Culinary Arts Team had several members place in the Moraine Park Technical Culinary Olympics that was held on recently. Schools from surrounding counties were invited to compete in one of three categories for the gold (first place), silver (second place) or bronze (third place) medals.

South silver medalists in the sandwich relay competition were Jean Vue and Anna Godeman. Vue and Godeman were the only 2-person team in field of nine 3-person teams. Also in the sandwich relay, Brandon Schwartz, Kyle Yang and Spencer Ebbers, earned honorable mention.

Silver medal winner in the cake decorating competition was Ntximhlub Vang with her Apple Cinnamon Chocolate Cake. Other successful entries were Mark Dietrich in the create a plate competition and Andrew Sandwick in the cake decorating competition.

The culinary arts students are all enrolled in the ProStart school to career program, which was created by the National Restaurant Association. 21st century skills are stressed to prepare students for the world of work. This program has been successfully operating at South High School for 10 years under the direction of instructor Betty Price. Successful completion of the intensive program is articulated with several national post secondary institutions and offers the opportunity for many scholarships.
