Dear SASD Families,
As the District looks towards the 2024-2025 school year and beyond, we are revisiting the idea of eliminating the early release Wednesday schedule and replacing that time with full-day recesses for staff professional development. We are asking for your feedback on this idea.
A DRAFT calendar is pictured below. While this is a draft, and calendars will vary year-to-year, you can see the intent is to try and fit the days in to extend holiday weekends and long weekends due to other school recesses.
This proposed new schedule will drastically reduce the time some students currently spend on school buses on Wednesdays. The proposed calendar also eliminates the need for emergency make-up snow days. We plan to allow the first snow day of the year to be a day off for students, and any subsequent snow days will be virtual learning days that do not need to be made up.
The District will look into options for potential child care during the full-day recesses, depending on staffing availability and other factors. If a switch in the calendar is made, we will continue to remain in compliance with the state-mandated hours of education time.
In 2019, the SASD surveyed parents on the potential of a schedule change from weekly early-release Wednesdays to monthly full-day recesses. At that time, parents preferred the full-day recesses. However, we did not implement the new schedule because of scheduling changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
After reviewing the draft calendar below, please provide us with your feedback in a simple one-question survey: https://bit.ly/40tDjIn
