Have you heard? The Sheboygan Area School District (SASD) has a new and improved lunch program! Say goodbye to the old pre-packs. Jackson Elementary now has on-site cooking, making the food more crisp and hot, with the good smell in the air. With the addition of a salad bar, students only use one tray which equals less trash. These are very positive steps for Jackson School and the SASD.
A cook, Mrs. Wagner, said the food is a lot healthier and now 40% more kids are taking hot lunch.
We interviewed Alexis Gile, Gavin Grams, Destiny Benton, Aryanna Crawford, Dominic Schroeter, Dirk Dell Adema, and Emily Stockinger and asked them why they liked the new hot lunch. Replies included that they liked the salad bar and that they got to pick their own food. Others said they liked the healthier options. Students also said having one tray makes clean-up easier.
We took a survey asking all students during their lunch break if they liked the new hot lunch better than the old hot lunch. 89% of the students liked the new hot lunches better and 11% liked old hot lunches better.
As you can see these are positive for the SASD school nutrition program and many more students take and enjoy the new and improved hot lunches!
If your kids haven’t tried hot lunch this year, encourage them to give it a try. School lunch menus are posted on the Sheboygan Area School District website homepage at www.sheboygan.k12.wi.us
