Donald Opel and Ashwini Murthy from North High were recognized as Excellence Scholars. According to the foundation, Excellence scholars have demonstrated excellence in the academic and high motivation to achieve, have displayed a broad range of activity and leadership outside the academic setting, and have shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond.

Jacksen Wolff from South High was recognized as an Initiative Scholar. He was chosen by his school to “have demonstrated exceptional initiative in the classroom and have shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond.”

Karl Nienhaus, a physical education teacher at North High and Joe O'Brien, counselor also from North High were honored with Teacher Fellowships, which also automatically makes them candidates for the Wisconsin Teacher of the Year program. They are two of only 100 teachers chosen statewide. The Herb Kohl Teacher Fellowship recognizes teachers who have demonstrated superior ability to inspire love of learning in their students, have motivated others, and have provided meritorious service both inside and outside the classroom.

Awards of $6,000 are given to the teachers and their schools, and $10,000 scholarships will be given to the graduating high school students.

The Kohl Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship program was established by Herb Kohl, philanthropist and businessman, in 1990.
