Hearing and Vision Impairments

SASD provides services for students with hearing and vision impairments through the following programs.

Program for the Hearing Impaired
  • provides language experience-based education stressing receptive and expressive language growth utilizing total communication
  • provides home-based parent/family education and intervention to develop a communication system for the hearing impaired child, birth through five
  • provides development and remediation of academic skills through group and individualized instruction using total communication. Mainstreaming with total communication interpreters is provided to help children achieve their fullest potential
  • enables many hearing impaired elementary, middle, and high school students to receive a local education through services of an itinerant teacher of hearing impaired. This is achieved through tutoring, adapting the environment using FM equipment, changing the language level difficulty on tests and materials and providing support and inservicing to regular education teachers
  • encourages development of compensatory skills: speech-reading, auditory training, speech, manual communication skills and assistive listening devices as well as utilizing interpreters
  • enhances public awareness of the needs of the hearing impaired
Itinerant services for the visually impaired are available at the following locations in the district:
  • All Schools in SASD
Program for the Visually Impaired
  • provides visually impaired students with formal and informal assessments to assist in appropriate program placement and assist in development of an individual education plan for visually impaired students
  • enables visually impaired preschool, elementary, middle and high school students to receive educational programming through services of an itinerant teacher of the visually impaired. These services may include the following skills: typing, listening, daily living, orientation and travel, braille reading and writing, and low vision training
  • provides adapted materials and equipment necessary for the visually impaired student to participate in the school setting
  • facilitates cooperative efforts between school personnel and the family of the visually impaired student in co-planning effective and diversified methods and materials to achieve individual objectives for the visually impaired student
