Sheridan Elementary School is home to the Dual Language Program, an elementary academic program that is not available at other elementary schools in Sheboygan County. The Dual Language program offers academic instruction in both English and Spanish to students beginning in kindergarten through fifth grade at Sheridan. The program continues at Horace Mann Middle School.
Research supports the immeasurable educational benefits of bilingualism. All students are considered potential bilinguals and are held to the same high academic standards in both languages. Teachers' lessons incorporate aspects of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in both languages. Sheridan integrates a variety of progressive technology into the classroom as an important tool for teachers and students. Sheridan has diverse libraries of resources and a book room with a variety of literature to support guided instruction, readers' theatre, student investigations, and read alouds.
Parents at Sheridan are very involved by attending school events and participating in Parents Plus where parents and staff meet and collaborate to improve communication between home and school. Parents volunteer during school and in the after-school program and take a variety of adult and family education classes.
Sheridan Elementary School was recognized by Wisconsin Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Network as a School of Merit in 2011, 2012, and 2016 and a School of Distinction in 2013, 2014, and 2015. Sheridan was awarded Silver Level Recognition for student behavior in 2017, 2018, and 2019. The school was featured as a PBIS success story on the PBIS Network website, was selected as a finalist in the PBIS Student Video Competition, and was also awarded Exemplar school status.
Sheridan offers an extensive array of after-school activities through their 21st Century Community Learning Center, Los Lobos Bilingües. This program consists of an enrichment hour in which students participate in an array of academically enriching activities and an academic hour in which students work on academic skill-building that complements day school learning. Los Lobos Bilingües also partners with the YMCA for weekly field trips, the SASD’s Super Snack! program for healthy snacks, and integrates many additional strong community partnerships in their programming. Los Lobos Bilingües works closely with these community partners to provide parent and student education and host unique and educational family nights.
The diversity of the students and staff at Sheridan is a key component of the dual language program’s success. Sheridan is committed to supporting students to become culturally aware, well-rounded, bilingual, and biliterate students, which prepares students to live in a diverse society by learning to appreciate and respect the similarities and differences between their culture and the culture of those around them.
