Phonology Special Education Group

The Phonology Group meets on Wednesday mornings for two hours. The students in the phonology group have been identified with a severe phonological (speech sound) disorder and have a current Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Within the two-hour session, the students listen to and participate in a thematic story related to the speech sounds the majority of the students are targeting. Targeted phonological patterns may include syllable deletion, final consonant deletion, consonant sequence reduction, stopping, and fronting. They students complete an art activity also related to the phonological target. The students receive individual or small group instruction on their specific sound targets. Phonological awareness activities are also presented including listening skills, rhyming, segmenting into words, segmenting into syllables, and others. The students have opportunities to go to the library to borrow books from the ELC and complete their morning with a small snack.
