Health & Counseling Services

School psychologists provide a variety of support services to enhance the learning and social success of the student. These services include:

• Collaboration with teachers, parents, and school personnel about learning, social, and behavior problems.
• Working with students with disabilities or gifted and talented students.
• Assessment of academic skills, learning aptitudes, social skills, personality, and emotional development.
• Providing counseling, social skills training, behavior management, and other interventions.

School counselors address all students' academic, personal/social and career development needs. They serve a vital role in maximizing student achievement, and incorporate leadership, advocacy and collaboration to promote equity and access to opportunities and rigorous educational experiences for all students. The school counselors support a safe learning environment and work to safeguard the human rights of all members of the school community.

Collaborating with parents, teachers, and the Sheboygan community to promote student achievement, school counselors address the needs of all students through prevention and intervention programs delivered in the following ways:

• School Guidance Curriculum – This curriculum consists of structured lessons designed to help students achieve the desired competencies and to provide all students with the knowledge and skills appropriate for their developmental level. The school guidance curriculum is delivered throughout the school's overall curriculum.
• Academic and Career Planning – Professional school counselors coordinate ongoing activities designed to help all students establish personal goals and develop future plans.
• Responsive Services –preventative and/or intervention activities meeting students' immediate and future needs. These needs can be necessitated by events and conditions in students' lives and may require any of the following:
  • individual or group counseling
  • consultation with parents, teachers and other educators
  • referrals to other school support services or community resources
  • peer helping
  • information

• Professional school counselors also develop confidential relationships with students to help them resolve or cope with problems and developmental concerns.
  

School social workers are the link between home, school, and community. They are members of the educational team comprised of teachers, administrators, pupil services staff, and parents. School social workers promote and support student's academic and social success by providing specialized services such as:

• Individual and group counseling
• Support groups for students and parents
• Crisis intervention
• Home visits
• Social/developmental assessments
• Parent education
• Information and referral
• Collaboration with teachers, administrators and pupil services staff
• Collaboration with community agencies and organizations

A school social worker may be consulted when there is difficulty contacting a parent about a student's needs, suspicions that a child may be the victim of child abuse or neglect or when a student has poor school attendance.
