School Safety

In the Sheboygan Area School District, the safety and well-being of our students and staff is a top priority. We are committed to creating a secure learning environment where every student feels safe, supported, and prepared. Our comprehensive school safety program includes routine drills, staff training, and ongoing coordination with local emergency services.

Routine Safety Drills

To ensure everyone knows how to respond in the event of an emergency, regular safety drills are conducted throughout the school year. These include:

  • Fire Drills: Practiced monthly to ensure quick and orderly evacuation in case of fire.
  • Tornado/Severe Weather Drills: Conducted seasonally to prepare for extreme weather conditions.
  • Lockdown Drills: Simulate scenarios requiring enhanced security, such as intruder or safety threats, and help students and staff practice staying safe and secure.
  • Evacuation and Reunification Drills: Teach students and staff the procedures for relocating to a safe site and reconnecting families in case of an emergency.

All drills are age-appropriate and communicated to families in advance when possible. Our goal is to practice safety without creating fear.

Emergency Preparedness

Emergency response plans are maintained at every school site. These plans are developed in collaboration with law enforcement, fire departments, and local emergency management agencies. Key elements include:

  • Crisis Response Teams: Each school has a team trained to manage emergencies and coordinate with first responders.
  • Communication Systems: We use a multi-channel alert system to notify families quickly in the event of a real emergency.
  • Staff Training: Teachers and staff receive regular training on emergency procedures, first aid, and safety protocols.
  • Visitor Management: All visitors are required to check in and wear identification while on school grounds.

We continually review and update our safety procedures to reflect best practices and evolving needs.
