Art Students Create Mugs for SASD Retirees

May 29, 2025

In a thoughtful collaboration between students, teachers, and district staff, art students from North and South High Schools in the Sheboygan Area School District (SASD) have created one-of-a-kind mugs for retiring staff members.

This initiative was sparked by the SASD Human Resources department, which sought a more personal and meaningful way to recognize retiring employees. What emerged was a partnership with the district’s art programs, giving students an opportunity to contribute something special to those who helped shape their education.

Working under the direction of art teachers Brian Sommersberger at South and Dannielle Arneson at North, students hand-painted each ceramic mug using pottery glaze, then fired them in a kiln. The finishing touch on each piece is a hand-applied SASD logo in gold, a small but significant detail that ties the mugs to the district and its community.

Every mug is unique in design, reflecting the individual creativity of the students who made them, and serves as a lasting tribute to the impact each retiree has made on the district.

“These teachers and staff members have spent years supporting students, and now the students have a chance to create a keepsake to honor their time here,” said Jami Hintz, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources.

The project highlights the value of collaboration across departments and schools, adding a personal touch to the retirement gift. More than just a gift, the mugs serve as a reminder of the connections built within SASD, between teachers, students, and the broader school community.

This year, the SASD has 50 retirees with over 1,300 years in combined service. View all of our retirees here.

Retirees were invited to receive their gift and be recognized at the May 27 Board of Education meeting.
