Black Spring Foundation Donation Supports Educational Opportunities for SASD Students

January 8, 2025

Thanks to the generosity of the Black Spring Foundation, donations made in honor of Natalie Black and Herbert V. Kohler Jr. will benefit education and the Sheboygan community.

The substantial donation totaling over $466,000 to the Sheboygan Area School District will fund the Lexia Reading Intervention program, the Lakeland University Dual-Enrollment Program, and the introduction of new specialized programming for students with special needs.

Lexia, a computer-based reading program, is designed to help students develop literacy skills at their own pace. Used throughout the district, it tailors instruction based on each individual student’s needs - from accelerated reading to extra support for English learners or special education students.

The funding will also continue to allow high school students to earn college credits free of charge. In its second year of implementation, the SASD partnership with Lakeland University allows SASD students free access to Lakeland Concurrent Academic Progress Program (CAPP) courses, simultaneously providing high school and college credits. Nearly 900 students took advantage of the courses in the program’s first year, and more than 5,000 college credits with a value of more than $2 million were earned.

Additionally, the donation will fund a new early elementary special education program. This program is designed to create a safe, supportive, and productive learning environment for students needing intensive support in functional, social, and behavioral skills.

“We are deeply grateful for this support, which allows us to implement these vital programs and initiatives for our students,” said Dr. Jacob Konrath, Superintendent of the Sheboygan Area School District. “These initiatives will provide students with tools and opportunities to succeed academically, whether through literacy intervention, free access to college-level courses, or specialized programs for those with special needs.”
