Securly: New Student Online Safety Solution

August 17, 2020

Dear Parents,

As we begin the 2020-2021 school year, we are pleased to share that the Sheboygan Area School District has installed an improved internet filtering solution for all school technology including chromebooks, ipads, and desktop computers.

This new program is called Securly and it features several components to help ensure the safety of our students and staff. The overarching component is the Securly Filter which is used to block access to inappropriate websites and material on our school-issued devices. In addition to blocking inappropriate content, Securly monitors student online activity 24-hours-a-day and alerts district staff when it detects questionable activity such as searches, sites visited, Google Drive contents, or emails sent/received that indicate a student may be considering self-harm, harming others, or are involved in cyber-bullying.

Securly was implemented so schools can partner with families to provide a safer online experience for students. We also needed to gain greater oversight and mastery of our technology program that provides a device for each student in grades K-12 to make sure students are safe, parents are kept informed, and teachers can manage devices in their classrooms with ease.

Securly also offers a parent APP called Securly Home that allows parents to monitor the use of school devices at home. Parents can view recent searches, sites visited, and videos watched on their child’s school-owned device, as well as turn internet access on or off, set alerts and sign up for weekly reports. Watch for a follow up email with more information on how to set up the app and connect it with your child’s school accounts.

In addition, Securly offers a Tipline for students, parents, and teachers to submit anonymous tips through text, email, or phone. Tips will be reviewed and routed to school staff 24-hours-a-day. Our Tipline will be set up in the next few weeks and will be ready to use when school starts.

We will be sending out more information as we get closer to the beginning of the school year regarding the Securly Home Parent APP. You can find more Securly parent resources on the Instructional Technology website under the parent tab.
