Dear Parent/Guardian,

Reporting student progress is an essential part of the communication and partnership between home and school. We believe that it is our district’s professional responsibility to provide parents and students with information that accurately reflects a student’s level of performance and progress meeting academic and learner responsibility standards.

Each of the Sheboygan Area School District’s elementary schools have been using standards-based report cards for the past 20 years. This means that our report card is based on a combination of our district’s curriculum expectations and the Wisconsin State Standards.

The 2022-23 elementary report cards have been updated to better align with our curriculum and reflect what students are expected to know and be able to do as defined by the grade level standards. The achievement box found on previous report cards has been eliminated and instead your child’s progress is reflected by a grade-level specific set of standards. The updated report card has a Performance Key that is consistent for academic and learner responsibilities among all grade levels.  The key includes a 3-2-1 scale with the following descriptors 3-Meets the Grade Level Standard, 2-Demonstrates Growth toward the Grade Level Standard, 1-Does Not Meet the Grade Level Standard at this time. If your child earns a 3, it means they have demonstrated proficiency with the standard and may have opportunities for enrichment. If your child earns a 2, it means they are on target to reach the standard at the end of the year with a little more instruction and practice. If your child earns a 1, it means the child is not on track to meet the standard by year's end, but it does not mean they are failing or below average. It does mean that we must work together to accelerate their progress.

Learner responsibilities have been updated to reflect learned actions that enable students to access learning and interact with others productively in the community. These complement the curriculum content taught in the elementary grades and are a natural part of learning about oneself while interacting with others.

This report card is designed to provide a “snapshot” of grade-level standards and communicates an individual student’s progress towards independently meeting those expectations. The report card is just one component of our grade reporting system. Teachers communicate with parents in many other ways (e.g phone calls, email, conferences, homework, etc). Should you have any questions about your child’s report card, please contact your child’s teacher.

We look forward to working together to provide your child with the skills and tools to be successful and reach their fullest potential. Report cards are accessible through Skyward beginning Friday, November 11th, reporting progress in the first quarter for students in Grades K-5.

Sincerely,

Sheboygan Area School District
