Urban Pivot to Virtual Learning

December 30, 2022

Overnight on December 26, a frozen water pipe in a third floor science classroom burst causing significant damage to that classroom, as well as the classrooms on the floors beneath it. In all, six classrooms in the school sustained substantial water damage.

During the cleanup process, it was determined that some of the old ceiling tiles that were water damaged and had fallen to the floor contained small amounts of asbestos. An outside environmental company, which specializes in the asbestos abatement, has been secured to lead the cleaning process. The cleanup work has already begun and crews will be working all weekend. It is anticipated that the cleanup process will be completed by Monday. Once the cleanup process is completed, rigorous air testing will be conducted throughout the building to ensure the absolute safety of our staff and students.

As a result of the time needed for both the cleanup and air quality testing to be completed, it will be necessary for Urban Middle School to be closed to students and staff on Monday, January 2, and Tuesday, January 3. We will transition to an online learning plan for Monday and Tuesday as follows:

Monday, January 2 - Lexia and Aleks online learning:

    • Lexia- Students should complete 60 minutes of Lexia (20 minutes in each strand of Word Study, Grammar and Comprehension). If students have completed Lexia they should complete 30 minutes of reading from a book of their choice.
    • ALEKS - Each student should complete 60 minutes of ALEKS with the goal of completing at least 4 topics. Students are encouraged to use a notebook to show work. ALEKS can be accessed through the red McGraw-Hill app in Clever.

Tuesday, January 3 - We ask that all staff and students follow the normal bell schedules on these days for virtual classes. The day will begin with Homeroom from 7:40 a.m. to 7:54 a.m. where teachers and students will have a chance to touch base on the plan for the virtual school day.

Attendance will be taken each hour of the day (except Lunch) so please plan to attend each class.

We will be routing students through the Urban Virtual Learning HUB.

Teachers will post your Google Meet links for each class in the Daily Assignments page.

If your child needs a chromebook, Internet access, or a quiet place to study please reach out to Principal, Dr. Di Stefano (tdistefano@sasd.net) or Assistant Principal, Mr. Torres (jtorres@sasd.net) and we will work with you on accommodations.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Please know we take the safety of our students and staff very seriously and are tending to this matter swiftly and safely. Further updates regarding the status of the cleanup process and information regarding when students can return to school will be shared on Monday, January 2 by 3:00 p.m.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
