Charter schools are public schools and tuition-free. They offer a unique educational experience not already offered in the public sector in a surrounding area. The founders of Lake Country Academy chose a specific design supporting high academics and a virtuous environment defined by three pillars: Direct Instruction, Core Knowledge, and Core Virtues.
We use Direct Instruction as a teaching method and group students in math, reading, and spelling by ability, not by grade. Grouping by ability creates smaller groups, allows for close progress monitoring of each student, and enables teachers to teach more efficiently. In a typical classroom, you will see teacher-led instruction with rapid pacing and frequent group responses. Students in every ability are engaged and learn to take responsibility for their own learning.
Core Knowledge is a well-rounded curriculum, rich in facts, used for science, literature, history, geography, music, and visual arts. Students are with their peers for these classes and are not based on ability grouping. Each grade is in sync with the next so students build year-to-year on knowledge gained from each subject area without repetition or gaps.
Core Virtues is our character education program and is integrated in classwork, behavior management, and the overall culture of the school. Students learn and apply values that are commonly believed to be important, such as responsibility, respect, perseverance, kindness, generosity, and honesty. A different virtue is highlighted each month and is the focus of weekly activities.
Spanish is taught in kindergarten through eighth grade. Shurley Grammar is introduced in first grade, teaching students to identify parts of speech and understand proper usage, capitalization, and punctuation. By middle school, students have a strong foundation for writing and are tasked with projects utilizing their creative writing, critical thinking, and time management skills.
We offer a morning and afternoon 4K program which each meet three hours a day, Monday through Friday. A typical day for a 4K student would include theme and calendar time, math and language instruction, free play and music, and art or gym.
The school culture is also supported by maintaining a uniform policy for students, professional dress for staff, families volunteering 40 hours per school year, and students engaging in service opportunities around the community.
(K – 8) 8:00 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.
(4K) 8:00 – 11:00 a.m. or 12:15 – 3:15 p.m.
