Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS)

What is PBIS?

PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. PBIS is about teaching and promoting safe, respectful and responsible behaviors. Students are recognized for making positive choices that follow our school expectations.

Our goal is to create safe and caring learning environments that promote the social, emotional, and academic development of all children.

Be Respectful. Be Responsible. Be Safe.

Staff members hand PAWS to any student who is displaying appropriate behavior, verbally praising the specific behavior that was observed. Sheridan incorporates a variety of PAWS and draws throughout the school calendar.  Lunchroom PAWS, Double PAW Days, Golden PAWS and Bonus-Drawing Days all give several opportunities to staff and students to recognize appropriate behaviors.

Sheridan hosts quarterly activities for students to celebrate positive behavior and choices.

During the 2021-22 School Year, 194 or 80% of Sheridan students consistently showed that they were respectful, responsible and safe and positively responded to Universal Level systems.

All students participated in our quarterly celebrations for being respectful, responsible and safe.

The following were the celebrations the students enjoyed:

  • 1st Quarter: movie and snack.
  • 2nd Quarter: popcorn party
  • 3rd Quarter: Tornado Ready assembly
  • 4th Quarter: Sheridan Ninja Warrior

Cool Tool Lessons are behavioral lesson plans that define, teach, model, and practice desirable behaviors.  At Sheridan, the Cool Tool Lessons are selected based on school-wide data.

All-school assemblies help improve the school climate by reinforcing behavioral expectations and celebrating the positive school community.  Assemblies are held monthly.  Students are recognized during the assemblies for positive academic, behavioral and attendance performance.

Sheridan Elementary School was recognized by Wisconsin Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Network as a School of Merit in 2011, 2012, and 2016 and a School of Distinction in 2013, 2014, and 2015. Sheridan was awarded Silver Level Recognition for student behavior in 2017, 2018, and 2019. The school was featured as a PBIS success story on the PBIS Network website, was selected as a finalist in the PBIS Student Video Competition, and was also awarded Exemplar school status.
