Library & Technology

About Urban's Library

The Urban Middle School Library welcomes students and staff to utilize our ever-expanding collection of books, databases, and makerspaces. Library visits are scheduled for every other week with students' language arts classes. During this time, students participate in various activities to expand their library and information literacy skills and are given time to check out library materials. Additional visits are also scheduled to help support specific curriculum needs (i.e. research projects).

Students are encouraged to use the library after school, as it is open until 4:00 PM on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Mission of the Library Program

  • Promote literacy and a love of reading
  • Teach information literacy skills (how to find, evaluate, organize, and use information)
  • Help students learn to use technology safely, ethically, and efficiently
  • Support students having difficulty with their technology (troubleshooting and repair)
  • Provide open and free access to a wide range of ideas and viewpoints
  • Offer students a friendly, non-judgemental place where they can feel welcome and valued

Circulation Policies

Students may check out up to 5 items at a time and keep them for two weeks. If you haven't finished a book when it is due, bring it in and we can renew it for you.

We do not have late fees. The worst we'll do for overdues is pester you with weekly email reminders. If you lose a book, though, or damage it so badly it must be discarded, you will need to pay for its replacement.

A few of the ways our library program increases student learning:

  • Providing books for pleasure reading and to support the school's curriculum
  • Recommending books students might enjoy
  • Assisting with research projects
  • Coordinating the 1-to-1 Chromebook program at school
  • Helping students and teachers with technology problems or questions
  • Instruction on how to use online resources such as databases
  • Providing a welcoming space conducive to reading or study
  • Instruction in using libraries comfortably and confidently (catalog searching, using call numbers, understanding the Dewey Decimal System, checking out ebooks)
