How do I apply for Foodshare benefits?

All children in households receiving benefits from the Wisconsin Foodshare program are eligible to receive free meals. If you apply for Foodshare through Sheboygan County, you may automatically receive free meals from the Sheboygan Area School District. Free and Reduced Meal is a benefit available for qualifying families. It guarantees that your child is able to receive free breakfast and lunch meals at school at no cost to you. Many students qualify for free and reduced meals but not taking advantage of it.

For the 2023-24 school year, all students will receive breakfast and lunch at no charge because the Sheboygan Area School District qualifies for the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) of the National School Breakfast and Lunch Program.

This government-sponsored program is completely confidential. The software used for processing applications and counting daily student meals is private and confidential; as children receive their breakfast or lunch through the school lunch line, there is no way any other person can know the financial situation of your child.

  • Letters are mailed at the end of July to all applicants who were pre-approved by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) for free meals. School age student(s) listed on the letter are not required to have an application on file. If a student's name(s) from your household is missing on the letter, please call Dawn at 459-3568; per DPI we can automatically approve your child for free meals because the approval is based on the entire household.
  • Parents will receive a letter indicating approval for free or reduced lunch status. All letters sent from this office notifying your household of free and reduced status should be kept. Please do not throw the letter away. These letters can be used as proof of eligibility for discounts on other programs/testing offered within the Sheboygan Area School District and Recreation Department.
  • Additionally, if your household's total income is below certain amounts, your child can eat free. You must fill out an application.

Reduced Price Meal Costs Eliminated

The School Nutrition Program eliminated costs to families for reduced prices meals. This means that if you qualify for “reduced-price meals” your child will be able to receive a meal completely for free at no extra charge to you. Previously there was a small price of $0.30 to $0.40 per breakfast/lunch meal. That cost will no longer apply.
