Individuals and families who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence are considered to be experiencing homelessness by the McKinney-Vento Act.
The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act was created to ensure that children and youth experiencing homelessness have the same opportunity to be successful in school as their housed peers.
The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and the Sheboygan Area School District Board of Education policy 5111.01 ensure the educational rights for students who are experiencing homelessness. This program is governed by federal law.
Parents or guardians of students experiencing homelessness or unaccompanied homeless youth have the right under McKinney-Vento to appeal or dispute decisions made by the district regarding eligibility, school selection, or enrollment. [42 U.S.C. 11432(g)(3)(E)]
In the event of a dispute, the following forms must be filled out and sent to Amee Dulmes: adulmes@sasd.net.
