School Counselor

Welcome to the School Counselor site for Grant Elementary! My name is Dani Smith, and I am greatly enjoying my first year as part of the Grant School Family.
My goal is to support the social and emotional needs of our students, and I accomplish this through three main areas: whole classroom guidance lessons, small group work, and individual counseling.

We have a few building-wide initiatives that we are continually working on and promoting with students:

**Mindfulness- This teaches students to focus on their inner self so they can be "in the moment." We like to have students start their day with a "Mindful Moment" where we do breathing activities, thankfulness thoughts, body stretches, etc.

**Zones of Regulation- Feelings are broken down into "zones" and assigned a color. Students are taught how their body might feel in each of the zones as well as strategies to get out of certain zones.
Blue- Sad, Bored, Sick, Tired
Green- Good to Go, Ready to Learn, Content, Focused, Calm, Happy
Yellow- Frustrated, Upset, Silly, Anxious, Worried
Orange- Watch Out and Slow Down!!!
Red- Furious, Mad, Terrified, Out of Control
As much as I am here to support students, I am also here to support families. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns you may have, whether it is about your child/children, inquiring about various community resources, or anything else that might pop up.
