Activities at Grant School

At Grant, students and families have many opportunities to be involved and learn outside of the school day. We offer a variety of evening activities for families, as well as after-school programs and clubs for students. Follow us on Facebook and check our calendar to stay up-to-date on our upcoming activities and their schedules!

Family Meetings

We believe that to be successful in school and in life, children need to be equipped with the social and emotional tools necessary to interact with others and create a safe and orderly environment. At Grant, we teach and reinforce the five characteristics of respect, responsibility, kindness, self-control, and honesty. We meet as an entire school once per month to teach, encourage, and celebrate our students.

KidStop Childcare

KidStop Childcare is designed for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. The KidStop community partnership meets the needs of families by providing a safe and affordable place for students before and after school. At Grant Elementary, before and after-school childcare is provided by the Recreation Department in partnership with the YMCA. Registration for KidStop is open throughout the school year and can be done online here or by contacting the Recreation Department at 920-459-3773.

Student Council

The Student Council is composed of 4th- and 5th-grade students, whose primary role is to organize, plan, and coordinate school fundraising events, school functions, and special school activities. Students in 4th grade are able to serve as class representatives. Students in fifth grade have the opportunity to serve as class representatives or run for positions such as president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and media specialist. Meetings are held twice a month during the students' lunchtime.

Homework Club

The Homework Club starts in the fall, meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. Students must sign in for either a half session or the entire session, with sign-out times available at 3:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. An educational assistant will supervise the program, which is expected to continue until the end of May.

Great Start Conferences

This event is held at the end of August to welcome new families to school and welcome back those who are returning. It is a good way to touch base with teachers and staff and to bring in school supplies to "lighten the backpack" for the first day of school. Busing information is also available.

PBIS

What is PBIS?

PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. PBIS is about teaching and promoting safe, respectful, and responsible behaviors. Students are recognized for making positive choices that follow our school expectations. When students do not follow expectations, they are re-taught the appropriate behavior and, when necessary, are given an Office Discipline Referral (ODR).

Coding Club

Youth-Tutoring-Youth (YTY)

Youth-Tutoring-Youth is a program that provides high school students with an opportunity to give direct tutoring assistance to elementary classrooms under the guidance of a supervising and coordinating teacher. Tutoring occurs in one-on-one, small-group, or whole-group settings. High School students typically work with students for one semester.

Fifth-Grade Instrumental Music

Students participating in an instrumental music program develop self-discipline through regular practice, teamwork, and leadership skills while playing with peers, and self-confidence when playing for friends and family.

Band

Beginning band is open to all 5th-grade students. We offer instruction on flute, oboe, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, and combined percussion. Students receive one twenty-minute lesson and one thirty-minute full rehearsal per week. Students participating in an instrumental music program develop self-discipline through regular practice, teamwork, and leadership skills while playing with peers, and self-confidence when playing for friends and family.

Orchestra

The strings program is open to all 5th-grade students. Students who participate in the strings program attend a weekly, small-group lesson that is scheduled before school or during the school day. Instruments available for study are the violin, viola, cello, and string bass.

Special Events

Check out all of the special events and activities at Grant Elementary School!

In September, Grant School families gather for a Potluck Supper and Family Meeting, where they have the opportunity to see the Grant School Family in action.

Each year, the theme of the Kick-off is different, but the goal remains the same: to give students a chance to share their school experience with their adult family members. It's a great time for everyone, from the new-to-Grant family to the long-time-Grant families! Some examples of our themes include Grant School Family Jeopardy, "What Happens When My Student Gets an Office Referral?", Grant School Family Feud, and our Mindful Classroom Initiative.

Each fall, Grant School families gather for the annual harvest party.  Enjoy mingling with other Grant School families, and support our school by stocking up at the book fair, which is on display for a whole week!

In the spring, Grant hosts its annual Spring Fling, where we have food and raffles for everyone! Students and their families can enjoy music by a local DJ and a fun photo booth. Pizza and other snacks are sold at a minimal price. This fundraiser is organized by our PTO, which helps support field trips for all our classrooms.

In December, students are given the opportunity to select a holiday gift for their parent(s) free of charge.  A gift shop atmosphere is set up in the Principal's office by several of our caring, retired teachers, who give of their time and talents to make this event truly memorable. Donated gifts are collected throughout the year and are artfully displayed. Students select the gift(s) for their parents, and our volunteers specially wrap the selected gifts for the students.

Grant Elementary School hosts two Scholastic Book Fairs throughout the school year. The Book Fair offers a wide variety of book choices suitable for children from kindergarten through fifth grade.

At this event, each student will be entered in one running event and one field event. All the events will take place before lunch. An obstacle course is scheduled to follow lunch. The boys' and girls' events will be held separately, with the boys competing in the running events first and the girls competing in the field events first. Each student will choose his/her running and field event for the day from the list below. Students have been introduced to various running and field events during physical education class, so hopefully, each student will find an event in which they enjoy and can excel. Ribbons will be awarded to the top ten finishers in each event, and every participant will receive a certificate of participation.

This day is meant to be one of fun, excitement, and good sportsmanship! The events are run by current and former Sheboygan Area School District employees, as well as students from North and South High Schools. Remember that a true sportsman will always congratulate their competitor, whether they win or lose. We hope to see a lot of handshaking and high-fives, not only among friends and classmates, but also opponents.

Our Fifth-Grade Recognition ceremony is held each year to honor and recognize our 5th-grade students as they complete their elementary school careers and wish them well on their new adventure—middle school! Refreshments will be served after the program, so plan to stay and share some memories of Grant and enjoy time with family and friends.

Jump Rope For Heart is a national education and fundraising event sponsored by the American Heart Association and the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE). This event engages elementary students with jumping rope while empowering them to improve their own health and help other kids with heart-health issues. It is typically held during the month of February, and the children learn and practice their jump roping skills during physical education class to help improve their strength, gain confidence, build stamina, and extend their physical abilities in other activities.
