Participation in the Red Raider Manufacturing (RRM) program sparked this South High student's interest in programming and pursuing a tech-based career.
Learn more about Karol's experience:
Student Name: Karol Bonilla
High School: South High School
Grade: 12
What Tech Ed classes are you currently taking, or have you taken in your high school career?
What other classes are you taking? Myths and Legends, Independent Study Programming, and Art Portfolio
What activities are you involved in? I was involved in the Dungeons and Dragons group and did Hap Moo Do martial arts during two years of high school. I am currently planning on participating in Catholic Heart Work Camp again this year. Last year, we volunteered to help people in Huntingburg, Indiana.
What is your favorite thing about your Red Raider Manufacturing experience? I really enjoyed the hands-on aspect of the Tech Ed department. Not only does it encourage students to go at the pace that they need, but it also helps them branch off and make their own discoveries. After taking Electricity Electronics and Automation in my first year, I realized how much I enjoyed programming and using Arduino boards, leading me to learn more about it in my free time.
What are your future plans? After graduating from high school, I plan on seeking a degree in information technology at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay starting in the fall. After learning Arduino coding with Mr Kachel in my first year, I was inspired to learn more about programming. Though I might be going into a tech-based career, I plan on practicing metalworking and woodworking in my free time, occasionally combining my knowledge of programming with these skills.
What project are you most proud of? The project I am most proud of would probably be the Exacto knife holder. It was my first time fully using the machines in the metals lab, so it was confusing at first. Once I got the hang of it, I felt proud of my work, I was able to create something simple, yet rewarding that I could call my own.
